Yet Another Endorsement

The following letter appeared in the May 17, 2014 Cape Cod Times entitled, "Rebecca Putnam has experience to be selectman." Thank you, Ms. Hickey!

Falmouth has a fantastic opportunity to elect a selectman who will make Falmouth an outstanding place to live, work and play.

Rebecca Putnam — an eight-year town meeting veteran — is running for selectman. Rebecca is someone who has the requisite experience to be selectman. She has served in leadership roles for local nonprofit organizations, has been involved in town government, and is a successful small-business owner.

We can see her values in her son Andrew, who has served our community on the Affirmative Action Committee and the Cape Cod Commission, and in her two daughters, Kaytlen and Victoria, who have also volunteered their time to our community and schools. Her husband, Brent, is now chairman of the Board of Selectmen. I have had the pleasure to work professionally with Rebecca and see firsthand her mastery of negotiation and conflict resolution.

With Rebecca's election, the selectmen would have someone who can hit the ground running, and the board would have a female majority for the first time.

For the first time in more than 40 years, I have chosen to put a political sign on my lawn to indicate the best candidate for selectman: Rebecca Putnam.

Another Endorsement

The following letter appeared in the May 17, 2014 Cape Cod Times entitled, "Elect Rebecca Putnam instead of another dud." Thank you, Ms. Finnell!

May 17, 2014

As Falmouth considers its next selectmen, it would be wise to recall some previous disappointments.

We elected someone active in her neighborhood but with zero experience in town government. She lasted one term after controversial speed "bumpuses" mysteriously appeared on her neighborhood roads.

We elected a college professor who refused to let the selectmen recite the pledge of allegiance, making Falmouth a national embarrassment. She lasted one term.

We elected a member of the school committee who recently revealed that she has no knowledge of Falmouth's roads.

Three years ago, we brought back a retired selectman. He sued the town.

We've never been disappointed by a Putnam. Outgoing Chairman Brent Putnam brought dignity to the board and ousted an ineffective town manager. Andrew Putnam has served admirably on our Affirmative Action Committee, and on the Cape Cod Commission.

Now Rebecca Putnam — an eight-year veteran of town meeting — is running for selectman. Like her husband and son, she consistently does her homework and she listens. She is the only candidate who has committed to holding regular, open office hours, as a selectman, to listen to citizens concerns.

Please remember to vote Tuesday. Every vote counts!

An Endorsement

The following letter appeared in the May 15, 2014 Cape Cod Times entitled, "Elect Rebecca Putnam as a Falmouth selectman." Thank you, Mr. Drolette!

May 15, 2014
I'm writing to endorse Rebecca Putnam for selectman.
Rebecca has experience working as part of a team to lead organizations, just as our Board of Selectmen must work as a team to lead our town. She has served on the board of directors of several nonprofit organizations, including the local Kiwanis Club, and most recently joined the board of the Falmouth Fireworks Committee.
Rebecca is not new to town government. In recent years, Falmouth has elected selectmen with little or no government experience, sometimes with embarrassing results. As a veteran of town meetings, Rebecca has an institutional knowledge of our town government, how it works, and why we do what we do. Her presence on the board would help it avoid repeating mistakes of the past.
Rebecca has project experience. I've personally worked with her on several developments and can attest to her understanding of projects, including establishing milestones, and keeping costs under control.
The Board of Selectmen is Falmouth's ombudsman. If we approve the water and sewer projects, we'll need someone on the board who knows what questions to ask and where the pitfalls lie.
I can think of no better candidate for selectman than Rebecca Putnam.

Falmouth Kiwanis

Rebecca is on the Board of Directors for The Kiwanis Club of Mashpee.

Why Mashpee? Because there is no Falmouth Kiwanis.

However, that is about to change. The members of the Mashpee Kiwanis are leading the drive to recharter a Kiwanis Club in Falmouth. The first meeting will be held on

Wednesday, April 30 at 5:45pm - 8:00pm
at Oysters Too, 876 East Falmouth Hwy, in East Falmouth.

Come and see what Kiwanis is all about!

This will be our first meeting. Why Join Kiwanis? We believe children and their communities benefit from the efforts and a dedicated group of caring and hands-on volunteers. Does this describe you!! If so please consider attending.

If you're interested and can't make it, you can contact Rebecca, or the Mashpee Kiwanis Club at mashpeekiwanis@gmail.com, or call Mashpee Kiwanis President Tammy Gray at 508-328-2022.

A Little Bit about Rebecca's Community Service

A lifelong resident of Falmouth, Rebecca's roots here are deep and wide, and community service is no stranger to her...
  • Rebecca has been elected and re-elected as a town meeting member in Precinct 9 since 2006.
  • Rebecca previously volunteered as a coach for the Falmouth Youth Hockey house mite program.
  • As a member of the Cape Cod Women's Hockey League, Rebecca served on the board of directors and as treasurer.
  • Rebecca is a very active member of the Mashpee Kiwanis club, currently serving on their board of directors and working to restart the Falmouth Kiwanis club.
  • An avid golfer, Rebecca organized and managed the annual “Play for Pink” tournament at the Ballymeade Country Club for four years, raising over $40,000 for breast cancer research.

...or her family...

  • Rebecca's husband, Brent, is well known for his work as a selectman.
  • Rebecca's father, John Druley, previously served on the Zoning Board of Appeals for 10 years and was a member of the Falmouth Rotary Club.
  • Rebecca's grandfather, Robert Roderick, was born, lived and died in his home on Main Street in East Falmouth. Bob served in the U.S. Army in World War II, and was honored many times in his life, including Cape Verdean Citizen of the year in 1986, and the Falmouth Chamber of Commerce Special Recognition Award in 2012.
  • Her sister, Stephanie McDowell, led the very successful campaign to build a new playground at the East Falmouth Elementary School – an effort that was accomplished entirely with private donations.
  • Rebecca & Brent's son, Andrew, is a town meeting member, and former chair of the town's Affirmative Action Committee. Currently Falmouth's representative to the Cape Cod Commission, Andrew was chosen by his peers to be the Commission's secretary.
  • Their eldest daughter, Kaytlen, volunteered with the Friends of Falmouth Dogs at the dog shelter during her high school years.
  • Their youngest daughter, Victoria, served as a member of the warrant committee for the Lawrence Junior High School town meeting. Victoria was later elected clerk, and then became the first female moderator.

A Little Bit about Rebecca's Professional Experience

At one time a college-level lacrosse referee and field hockey umpire, Rebecca understands the value of rules. Playing by the rules means playing fair. Everyone is treated equally, and when someone steps out of bounds, they are held accountable.

As an athletic coach, Rebecca knows how to build teams. She knows how to find and nurture talent, and to put the right people in the right positions. Rebecca is particularly proud of her work as the varsity coach for the Falmouth High School girls lacrosse team. Under her leadership, the team went to the state playoffs for the first time – a feat that was not repeated again until a decade after she had left.

Good salesmen use their communication and listening skills to bring parties together, find common ground, build relationships, and get things done – the kind of skills a selectman should have. Employed in the real estate business since 2001, Rebecca proved that she has these skills by winning several sales awards when she was an agent with the RE/Max Classic real estate office.

When Rebecca opened her own real estate office, Putnam Real Estate, in 2006, she was – and still is – the youngest minority owner/broker in Falmouth. A member of the Chamber of Commerce, Rebecca knows the ups and downs of owning a small business. She knows the value of hard work, what it's like to struggle in a down economy, and to balance the books and make ends meet. Indeed, when other real estate offices in Falmouth merged or closed during the recent recession, Rebecca maintained her independence.

A blast from Rebecca's past

This is the Falmouth High School Varsity Girls Lacrosse team that Rebecca took to the state playoffs in 2002. Rebecca is in the back row, far left.

Rebecca Putnam takes out nomination papers for Falmouth selectman

"Rebecca Putnam, 43, said she considered running for a Planning Board seat, but with her husband’s decision made, she felt a seat on the Board of Selectmen would fit her skills.

We have always tried to serve the community. That’s just how our family has been brought up and raised,” she said."
